THE BEGINNING
For over 30 years!The Puy du Fou adventure
When the château du Puy du Fou was discovered on the 13th of June 1977, all that was left were ruins overgrown with nettles. 30 years later the Puy du Fou, created by Philippe De Villiers, is heralded as a worldwide success with over 1.2 million visitors every year. Some milestones in 30 years of history...
1977-1978
1978 : The 1st Cinéscénie performance took place on the 16th of June and involved over 600 members of the Puy du Fou association. Captivated, the public applauds the actors and in the first year over 80,000 visitors fall in love with this show.1980-1989
1981 : Georges Delerue composes the first original sound track for the Cinéscénie.1984 : The Puy du Fou organizes its 1st charity event in aid of cancer research with Yves Montand as guest of honour. Since then the Puy du Fou has donated 1,700,000 euros to support many humanitarian projects in France and throughout the world.
1989 : To cope with the success of Cinéscénie which brings in ever more visitors, the Puy du Fou team decides to create an innovative daytime activity: the Puy du Fou Grand Parc brings together culture and recreation, entertainment and education, spectacle and thrills.
1990-1999
1990 : The Cinéscénie’s wooden stand, that could be dismantled, is no longer up to the job: the decision is taken to build a 12,000 seat panoramic stand.1990-1994 : Every year the Grand Parc produces a new show: The Falconry Spectacle (1991), the Theatre of Water (1992), Memory’s Path (1991), the Festival of Chivalry (1994)...
1993 : Alexander Solzhenitsyn is guest of honour at a special evening event at the Puy du Fou to pay homage to the people of the Vendée. In the same year, the Puy du Fou hosts the departure of the Tour de France, this cycling event comes back again in 1997 and 1999.
1995 : In a few months the Grand Parc’s Medieval City is built and opens its stalls. At the foot of the fortified wall, a new show is produced: the Minstrel Magician.
1997 : Inside the Grand Parc, the Fort de l’An Mil comes to life and takes visitors on a trip through Viking times. In this same year Cinéscénie’s 20th anniversary is celebrated: the stage area is enlarged by 12 acres and the stand seats an extra 2,000 spectators.
1998 : The Junior Academy is set up whose role is to train future Puy du Fou artists and technicians. It comprises 23 schools covering all performance arts and techniques and it takes in 300 pupils per year.
2000-2010
2000 : The Grand Parc produces the Battle of the Keep, a show with breathtaking stunts and Alain Delon as its patron.2001 : The Grand Parc inaugurates the Stadium Gallo-Roman presided over by Patrick Poivre d'Arvor and Jean Claude Killy. The "Gladiators" show is unique in the world! At the same time, Cinéscénie welcomes its 7 millionth spectator.
2003 : The Ball of the Phantom Birds, a new show for the Grand Parc, provides escape through a majestic ballet with birds of prey. This same year, the new Cinéscénie is performed in the presence of Alain Delon, Michel Drucker, Patrick Poivre d'Arvor, Jean Claude Killy and Nick Glennie Smith, composer of the new soundtrack.
2004 : At the entrance to the Grand Parc, the Bourg 1900 transports visitors right back into the Belle Epoque with its old shops and musical machines.
2005 : The Grand Parc has a new take on its show "The Vikings" thanks to even more amazing special effects! The Cinéscénie stage area is further enlarged with the construction, over 10,000m2, of new giant scenery depicting a village.
2006 : The biggest project ever undertaken by the Grand Parc is opened! The Grand Carousel, an enormous 6,000m2 hall, is the scene for a new swashbuckling show "Richelieu’s Musketeer".
2007 : Visitors can now make their journey back in time last even longer by staying at the Puy du Fou in the Villa Gallo-Romaine, right in the heart of Ancient Rome!
2008 : The Puy du Fou celebrates 30 years and creates 3 new attractions for the occasion: "The Puy du Fou Odyssey", "The Legend of Martin", and a dazzling new finale for Cinéscénie.
